The warm weather means you’ll probably be setting your thermostat to a lower temperature to stay cool. Thermostats are certainly one of the modern conveniences we often overlook. It is so easy to turn air conditioners on and off with just the touch of a button, but when it comes to maintaining comfort within your home and keeping your utility bills under control, things can get a bit more complicated.
Today, we want to help people make the most of their air conditioners by offering a few tips about setting the thermostat. These tips aren’t strict rules, but you may find them helpful.
- Set the thermostat fan to AUTO instead of ON. If you set the thermostat fan to ON, then it will run constantly even though you probably don’t need it to. The air will continue blowing even when the ideal temperature has been reached. Setting the fan to AUTO can help you save energy while the AC still keeps your space cool.
- Lower the temperature at night. Lowering the temperature on your thermostat a little might cost you a bit more on your energy bills, but it’s worth it if it helps you to sleep better. Studies show that many people have more restful sleep in a cooler room.
- Raise the temperature when you’re on vacation. If you are going on vacation, don’t turn off your air conditioner altogether. You want it to run minimally to keep the temperature and humidity under control, but you don’t need it to be exceptionally cool if no one is home, so raise the temperature a bit.
